On Monday evening I was able to see Grampy in the ITU, he was not conscious but had responded to a nurse during the day and seems to react to my Nana's voice more than anything else. Although it was good to be able to see him it was also really hard, he was surrounded by machines and everywhere you could see skin there was some form of IV as well as a dialysis machine and breathing apparatus One piece of news I was really pleased to hear is that although they are using machines to lighten the load for his recovery, his heart is beating on it's own, and he is unconscious mainly due to sedatives and pain relief as opposed to induced coma. The care of the nurses and doctors is just wonderful, and constant, there was always someone checking on him, and one nurse even came to give him eye drops, brush his teeth, and comb his hair while I was there. I joked to him that he couldn't get too used to it as he'd have to go home soon, and that at the very least he'll wake up with fresh breath!
By 11am on Tuesday all the machines except the breathing apparatus had been removed and although not lucid he was awake and responding to questions with shakes of his head and moving his fingers and toes when requested. The dialysis machine had been removed also and his kidney function had returned. The only set back today is that they have discovered that something is still not right in his abdomen and so are taking him back into theater, this time they hoep to be able to perform an external key hole type surgery if possible to reduce the risk of having to do another invasive procedure. Once again, we are holding our breath and hoping for the best!
